Book One Defender of the Flame
Starship pilot Terry Radnor is elated to be among those chosen to defend the secret colony Maclairn against enemies who pose a threat to the spread of paranormal human mind powers. He commits himself wholly to the goal of that world, not guessing how far his effort to protect it will take him from everything else he cares about--his promising career as a Fleet officer, his wife and soulmate, his unborn child. Torn away against his will, he is forced into exile from all that has previously mattered to him, and and must build a new risk-laden life far from Maclairn, without hope of fulfilling his earlier pledge. Yet a mysterious and extraordinary destiny has been predicted for Terry, and fate leads him to an even stranger one than anybody could have imagined.
Book Two Herald of the Flame
As captain of his own starship Estel, Terry Steward, born Terry Radnor, is committed to spreading acceptance of psi powers and other advanced mind capabilities throughout the colonies of humankind. Barred from contact with his beloved planet Maclairn, he now journeys from world to world, heralding the hopeful future about which he alone knows the full truth. But the opponents of mind-powers are gaining strength, and on Earth the persecution of people who develop such abilities is increasing. Soon targeted by bounty hunters, Terry risks everything that matters to him in a desperate attempt to defeat Maclairn's enemies, not guessing that if he lives long enough, he is destined for an even greater role in human history than he has played as a defender of its cause.
While this duology follows the Hidden Flame duology--consisting of Stewards of the Flame and Promise of the Flame, which tell of the founding of Maclairn--it is an independent and quite different story set two hundred years later that can be read alone. Though it is not a Young Adult book and is not appropriate for readers below high school age, it will be of special interest to adults and mature teens who have enjoyed Engdahl's YA novels Enchantress from the Stars and The Far Side of Evil since it deals with some of the psi powers depicted in those books and takes a similar view of humankind's place in the universe.

All in all, very satisfying. I was unable to finish the earlier Flame series, so I was hesitant to start this series but I'm glad I did. I'm a fan of Engdahl's from a long time back, and this feels much more like those earlier books in terms of having a story that hums along nicely.
this is a must read! I missed a day of work so I could finish reading it in one day. I enjoyed the main characters. i rooted for Terry. He had a dull life then he found amazing things that he could do and love at first sight. He got to be in charge of his own spacecraft. Kathryn is true love and then became his wife. To be put in charge of a planet. An Ambassador. She had one secret from Terry before they married but you will have to read the book to find out the secret she held from Terry.
Terry never felt like he belonged anywhere...He never fit in ever! He loved to fly space ships though and was a bit disappointed to find him self stationed on Titan...computer work...DUH...YUCK! His commanding offered him a chance to explore his psychic talents! Terry 's life transformed to a magical existence and the joy of belonging to something bigger than himself! Terry's adventures only start there as he and his new friends help humanity become more human!
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a review...BUY IT you can't go wrong! It's worth the read! Thanks Sylvia Engdahl for the opportunity! Keep up the good work!
